--How did J.M. McKnight Sr. get his name?--
In past years, the first son is named after his father. So my father should have been named T.H. McKnight, Jr.---- but as I understand the story, Judge Malone was a very strong willed father-in-law, and when my father was born, he told Verney, his daughter, and your grandfather, T.H.McKnight, that the boy was to be named after him. So the first son was named James Malone McKnight, after Judge James H. Malone.
The second son, your father, was then named after his father, T.H. McKnight.

Uncle Buddy was names for his Grandfather Malone, James Malone McKnight. He
was called James Malone until Lois came along and called him Buddy and it
stuck. They were married in 1938 and she did not like the double name hence
Buddy.

Lee:
My father always said he was able to place people whom he had met
because of his many "nicknames" through out his life. If they called him
James, then it was one period; Coney was another, and Buddy another.
As to why James--well that is an easy one. When my father was born,
he tells the story that Mayor James H. Malone walked into the hospital and
told your grandfather that the boy would be named after him. As you know
the first born son is normally named after the father but not so in this
case. The first born was named after his grandfather "James Malone"
McKnight. So your father, the second son, was named after his father T.H.
McKnight.
Now my father went on to tell that this did not always make your
father happy because using the usual rule of thumb, your father should be
the older since he was named after his father. My father said that many
people thought your father was the elder of the two when they were
introduced to both of them.
(Note: Tom McKnight Jr's response to the above paragraph:
I have always been proud of being Junior and it never bothered me someone might
think that I was the oldest.)

"It is possible - but not proven that this Peter Srote was the son of the
Peter Shrot who landed at Philadelphia, PA, from Wiesbaden, Germany, on the
ship, "Neptune", on 30 Sep 1754. Also, this elder Peter Shrot may have been
the same Peter Shrot who was on the List of Virginia Taxpayers in 1782, 1784,
and 1787 as living in Hampshire County, VA - now Hardy County, West Virginia.
The Peter Srote, who married Catherine Leatherman, travelled down the Ohio
River from Virginia to Kentucky on a flatboat before 1795 and landed near
Louisville on a flatboat before 1795 and landed near Louisville. Louisville
then consisted of only eight log cabins; and he travelled twelve miles East to
Floyd's Fork of the Salt River. Here he took up a tract of timberland and
built a log cabin. Floyd's Fork is the present site of Fisherville.
Research reveals that in 1794 in Jefferson County, KY, there was a Peter
Scrod, who was over 21 years of age, and who had a horse but no land. On 4 Jul
1796, a Peter Shrote was listed in Floyd's Fork. Analysis of these dates and
included information support the conclusion that Peter Schrod and Peter Shrote
werer the same person and that the information is consistent.
The Floyd's Fork Burying Ground is located just west of Fisherville, KY.
To reach the cemetary, go West from the Post Office about 11/4 miles, turn left
on Road 1531 (which is just before you reach Pope Lick Road), go up the hill,
and it is on the right side about 1/2 mile up after crossing the stream,
Floyd's Fork.
Peter Srote's will is recorded in Jefferson County Will Book 3, page 307,
entry No. 245. It was probated 3 Oct 1842. Peter Shrote raised flax and
cotten and raised sheep. His wife spun and wove and made all the clothes for
teh family. She was a woman of uncommon energy and force of character, endowed
with good nerves and a courageous spirit. She was an expert in the use of the
rifle.
The Shroats were German Baptists from Pennsylvania."
