SOUTHERN VETERAN DIES.
------
Member of Armistead's Cavalry Succumbs to Effects of Operation.
William T. McKnight, a soldier of the Old South, passed peacefully from
time to eternity Thursday morning at the Baptist Hospital. His death came at
2:30 a. m., form the effects of a second operation which proved too great a
strain for his advanced years.
Mr. McKnight, was born 76 years ago at Livingston, Sumter county, Alabama,
where he spent most of his life in various mercantile pursuits. It was there
that his wife died and was buried a few years ago. While always cheerful and
of a happy disposition, he often remarked that he longed for the time when he
should lie by her side and be at rest.
Prior to his removal to Memphis, Mr. McKnight was one of the oldest and
most respected citizens of Livingston, where he will be laid to rest by the
side of his dear wife and was beloved by his friends among the Confederate
veterans, who will venerate and cherish his memory.
When the sough seceded, young McKnight was among the first to shoulder arms
at Gainesville, Alabama. He served and fought with distinction throughout the
entire war with General Forrest as a member of Armistead's cavalry, Company A,
of which he was an active worker and member. ??They will?? pay the last
respects to his memory.
He is survived by three children, Mrs. W. A. Curry and Thomas H. McKnight
of Memphis and Robert T. McKnight of Gunnison, Mississippi.
