Hi folks!

I didn't realize my pages had expired. I just updated several of them in July. Thanks for the notice, though. It's always great to find new connections and "cousins".

Below is what I have on the Lancaster family. PLEASE add to this or make any corrections and let me know what you think. This will have a little more information that what I had on the web site.

Below that is what I have on the Hutcherson family. If I'm not mistaken, I got all that info from a McKnight's web page -- perhaps yours, Tom?

Please let me know what you all think about all this stuff. Thanks a million!.

Brad

She married J.NATHANIEL CAMERON March 17, 1879 in Sumter County, Alabama, son of JOHN CAMERON and BELINDA STREET. He was born October 22, 1852, and died November 06, 1911 in Sumter County, Alabama.

Notes for NANCY LEARD: Buried at Old Mt. Herman Cemetery in Sumter County, AL. (About 5 miles north on Millville Road in York, AL.) NOTE: This is not to be confused with the Mt. Herman Cemetery located on the same road. Mt. Herman Cemetery is located next to the Mt. Herman Church, which belongs to a black congregation. The Old Mt. Herman Cemetery is about 2 miles further up Millville Road near the site of the extinct stagecoach stop of Anvil, on the right side of the road. It is immediately alongside (separated only by a three-to-four inch high fence) the Millville Cemetery, which is a black cemetery. Neither of the cemeteries have a sign.

The Mt. Herman Baptist Church, to which most of the Lancasters and Leards belonged, was first built as a log church in the 1830's. A frame church was built about 1854, and the log building was later torn down to make more space for the cemetery. The church disorganized sometime after 1890. On August 24, 1908, it was reorganized, and Nancy "Nannie" Cameron was one of the new members. They were: John Dial, J.J. Gooden, Henry L. Wheeler, Mrs. Fannie Dial, Mrs. Nannie Cameron, Mrs. Ollie Bond, Mrs. Lyda McGowen, Mrs. Alma McGowen, Mrs. Erma Lancaster, Miss Colon Campbell, and Miss Mary M. Lancaster. The last recorded service for this church was May 19, 1918. The building was burned in a forest fire in 1933, and the church literally ceased to exist from that point.

The Sumter County map also shows a Leard Branch running through the woods on the opposite side of Millville Road from the cemetery.

The settlement at Millville was named for a Mr. C.P. Mills, who lived there. It was located North of York on the old York-to-Lauderdale (Mississippi) road, or "farm-to-market" road, now called Millville Road or Country Club Road. It has also been said that the booming town was called Millville because of the many mills located there, including a grist mill, saw mill, cotton mill and gin, and a brick kiln.

The Sumter County Journal (newspaper) in York, AL, dated Thursday, November 4, 1937, (page 4), includes the obituary for Nancy "Nannie" Leard Cameron. It reads as follows: "Nannie Leard Cameron, age 78, passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Pearl McDonald near Livingston Thursday October 18th following an extended illness. Mrs. Cameron is survived by two daughters, Mrs. R.L. Swain of Greenville, Miss., and Mrs. Pearl McDonald of Livingston. Funeral services were held at Mt. Herman Church, Friday October 29th, at 2 P.M., with Rev. W.L. Ezelle officiating. Interment followed in the Church cemetery. The pallbearers were, Ottis Cameron, India Cameron, Preston Cameron, Roy McDonald, Glenn McDonald, and Clarence Byrd. Koster Funeral Home, directing."

He was the 28th pastor of the Livingston First Baptist Church in Sumter County, AL, serving from March 20, 1903, to Sept. 1, 1904 (18 months). He had been liscensed by Mt. Herman Baptist Church near Millville (north of York) in 1869. He also served as pastor of Sumter County's Zion Baptist Church at Kinterbish from 1915 - 1917 and Cuba Baptist Church from 1915 - 1917 and 1921 - 1924, and as pastor of the Eutaw Baptist Church in Greene County (years?). He married LETHYE ANN WOODS February 03, 1904 in Emelle, Sumter County, Alabama, daughter of ELISHA WOODS and SARAH GREEN. She was born December 19, 1881 in York, Sumter County, Alabama, and died August 17, 1973 in York, Sumter County, Alabama.

Notes for PRESTON LEARD CAMERON, SR.: He was a farmer. Buried in Woods-Cameron Cemetery just off Hwy 17 & Hwy 80 intersection near Siloam, south of York, AL.

Notes for LETHYE ANN WOODS: Lethye was born in York (Sumter County, AL), which was settled in 1833 by South Carolinians. By 1838 a community was established there called New York. The name was changed to York Station about 1861 and then became York about 40 years later. She is also buried in Woods-Cameron Cemetery (at the intersection of Hwy 17 and Hwy 80 about 5 miles south of York, AL). This cemetery was once called Mt. Lebanon (and officially, still is, but the land is owned by the Woods family, and only Woods family members and Cameron family members are buried there). In 1896, Lethye's father, Elisha Woods, and others got mad at Reverend Hearn, the preacher at the Siloam Baptist Church, for a sermon against the Democratic candidate for governor. These men -- Elisha Woods, John Henry Tate (Elisha's nephew), Houston Shelton, Lee McDonald, and Sam Green (Elisha's brother-in-law) -- and their families left Siloam church and organized Mt. Lebanon church, which was located across the road (now Hwy 17) from what became the cemetery (at Scratch Hill). The school was there also. About 20 years later the church burned and most of the members returned to Siloam. Elisha died during that time and was buried there, although Lethye's brother Florence arranged that without saying anything to anyone.

Lethye (Mama Cameron, as she was called by all her grandchildren) hosted all the family at her house every Sunday afternoon for years. All the children would play all over her property, but she always said not to go to the cemetery because there were unmarked graves there and they might cave in. It is unknown if there really were unmarked graves, or if she just said that to keep the kids away from there. The cemetery was not used for years. Mama Cameron's husband Preston (who had died many years earlier) was buried in York and she had him moved not too many years before she died. It was called the Woods Cemetery, and after Mama Cameron died it became the Woods-Cameron Cemetery.

Note: Scratch Hill (or Scratchill) was a settlement named for the clay hill on which it was located. It is said that the hill was so slippery before the road was paved that the local folks had to "scratch" their way up. This area was also known as Hancock's Store, presumably named for a store located there.

Marriage Notes for PRESTON CAMERON and LETHYE WOODS: They were married at the home of her parents.

'Miss' Mattie worked at the Sumter Nursing Home both as an employee and as a volunteer. She spent her days caring for others and tending the needs of others. She spent many hours mending for the residents of the nursing home. She was an active member of the Siloam Home Demonstration Club. Until recently, 'Miss' Mattie participated in the Senior Adult Fellowship here at Siloam. She enjoyed playing the piano and watching her television shows, "Wheel of Fortune", "Walker, Texas Ranger", "Providence", "JAG", and many others. Many of us knew her as 'Miss' Mattie, some new her just as Mattie. She was Mother to three, but her most coveted title was that of 'Mee Ma'. She loved her family, her community, her church. 'Miss' Mattie will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. Though quiet in nature, small in stature 'Miss' Mattie enjoyed life. The members of Siloam will miss seeing 'Miss' Mattie scoot down the hall behind her walker after Sunday School. 'Miss' Mattie loved life and didn't want to miss a thing. Though her family had planned a 90th birthday celebration next month, we are assured that 'Miss' Mattie is enjoying the most glorious 'Birthday' party there is. We will miss you, Miss Mattie! We love you! "
